Anxiety is a threat to the mental wellbeing of many in the modern always-on, fast-paced society we inhabit. From statistics, back in 2013, 8.2 million people reported cases of anxiety in the UK.  In comparison to men, women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with a general form of anxiety. When faced with anxiety about 34% of the UK population admit to using alcohol and other illegal substances to deal with life. Moreover, in the UK, 4% of children from 5-16 report depression or anxiety.

Anxiety and depression are pathologies that affect human beings in many aspects of life, including social life, productivity, and health. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a constituent non-psychotomimetic of Cannabis sativa with great psychiatric potential, including uses as an antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like compound

What Is Anxiety?

Under danger or any stress, the body’s flight or fight response system is activated. When the threat or stress has passed the body goes back to the natural state. For someone with an anxiety disorder, this system is turned on even in day to day, non-threatening situations. It results in someone feeling apprehensive, nervous, and worried. Although the disorder is physiological, its symptoms (fear, nervousness) can manifest physical symptoms.

Panic attacks happen when someone experiences intense anxiety and fear that escalates within a short time. It is preceded by feelings of impending disaster, dizziness, rapidly palpating heart, and chest pain.

Some Anxiety Disorders

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Those diagnosed with GAD feel anxious, fearful or terror during day-to-day activities. It is thought to be caused by stress resulting from work and home environments.

Phobias

It is defined as an intense fear for an animal, situation, people or objects. Symptoms of anxiety start when in proximity to the object of your worries. Even thoughts or hearing about the phobia trigger anxiety.

Panic Disorders

It is when the person cannot pinpoint the trigger of the panic attacks. If they are also unpredictable, you may be diagnosed with panic disorder.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is an incurable condition that may last for many years. It is characterised by obsessive or unreasonable thoughts that result in compulsive behaviours. Mostly, OCD patients have a fear of germs. It among the most diagnosed conditions treated with talk therapy or medication.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

This happens after a person goes through traumatic situations such as war, rape or physical abuse. It can cause terror and panic during recall of experience during uncontrolled flashbacks or sleep.

Treatments for Anxiety

Conventional Methods

Conventional methods of treating anxiety involve taking pharmaceutical medications or undergoing talk therapy or both. Counseling helps patients to identify triggers of their anxiety. It usually consists of imparting skills to cope with anxiety. Pharmaceutical drugs provide relief, but it can only be temporary and not practical. Are there any other methods?

Use of Therapeutic Cannabidiol Oil

Cannabidiol oil (CBD) is an emerging treatment of anxiety proved to be effective a better alternative to pharm medications. The best study is on a 10-year old girl who had a severe case of PTSD cured using CBD.

This case study provides clinical data that support the use of cannabidiol oil as a safe treatment for reducing anxiety and improving sleep in a young girl with posttraumatic stress disorder.
